1.8K Pin40ShareTweetShare40 Shares Train travel across the globe is becoming increasingly popular due to its positive effects on the environment. Trains can do this by using electric tracks, which significantly decreases emissions. People everywhere are switching their travel methods from cars and planes to the railways. Not only is this better for the environment, but it’s also better for your wallets. Traveling by train is perfect for those with tight budgets and who want to save some extra cash. That sounds pretty good, right? The good news is that it gets even better! Are you traveling overnight? Not a problem. You can easily purchase a private cabin and snooze the night away comfortably while going from point A to point B. And most of the time, your baggage is free! If you’re only planning on traveling during the day, that’s also an option. As you can see, traveling by train is very versatile and budget friendly. Here are my must-know train travel tips for 2023! When To Buy Tickets? Plan ahead and get them in advance. To maximize your funds, it is suggested that you buy train tickets at least three months ahead of time. Often, there is availability even before that, up to eleven months, so definitely shop around if you are looking way in advance. Buying tickets this early will require some planning, but it will be cheaper in the long run. I say “some planning” because, at the time of purchase, you don’t need to know the exact dates. You can buy tickets for two weeks’ worth, or however many days, of travel for a particular month. No need to stress about certain days early on. If you are traveling in a group, you can also save money by buying tickets in bulk. Also, to avoid paying full price, the railways usually provide discounts for children and seniors. What Type of Pass Do You Need? Either Interrail or Eurail. Are you unsure of what type of rail pass you need? For the Interrail pass, you must be a citizen of Europe. Even if you live in Europe, you must be an actual citizen for this pass. If you are from anywhere outside of Europe or live there but are not a citizen, you will need a Eurail pass. This website has everything you need to know about train passes! https://www.eurail.com/en/eurail-passes/global-pass How Do You Activate Your Ticket? There are a couple way to activate your ticket. For ticket holders, you will be required to activate your ticket just before you board. Activation can be completed at the train station, or if you have an e-ticket, you can activate it right from the app associated with it. Be aware that your ticket cannot be changed or refunded once activated. I suggest arriving at the train station early in case there are any issues, or you have questions. Also, if you have not activated your ticket yet, you can change times, locations, or anything on your itinerary as often as you’d like! What Type Of Seat Is Right For You? There are many different options to choose from! Another essential bit of information for the must-know European train travel tips in 2023 is what seats to reserve. Just like flying, traveling by train has different seat options. If you have a first-class ticket, there is more legroom and more comfortable seats. For some rail lines, certain perks are included. You may get access to lounges at train stations, food and beverage services served at your seat, and faster boarding. Second-class seats are cheaper but still offer great perks for those on a budget. You will find yourself still with a large comfortable seat and room for your luggage. Although, you will have to leave your seat if you want to purchase something to eat or drink. If you are traveling by train overnight, there are options for everyone and every budget! The cheapest route is a seat in the main car that reclines with shared toilets. If you want to treat yourself, purchasing a cabin with your own bathroom is the fanciest way to go! With your own cabin, you get to recline fully, and it is for sure the comfiest option. However, you are provided and pillow and blanket with any overnight seat purchase. Traveling Between Countries If you are going from one country to the next, is there a border patrol? There is, but not quite like the border patrol you might think of if you’re an American. When you are ready to board, an employee will ask you to provide your passport, or legal documentation, allowing you to be in that country along with your ticket. After this, you will seamlessly travel between countries you’re traveling to. No long wait times at customs or passport control! How Much Luggage Can You Bring? What does it cost? The general rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t bring any luggage that you can’t handle by yourself. Also, it’s recommended that you don’t bring any more than two or three pieces of luggage. There are places above your seat, between seats, and at the end of the car to store your belongings. With that being said, your luggage is free on Eurail. Yep. You heard me. Your luggage won’t cost you anything. If traveling within specific countries, like Germany, double-check to ensure it’s within the required 83 cm, which is just under 3 feet. On some rail lines, if you check your bag, there might be a fee associated. So, depending on your route and which rail line you take, the only thing you have to pay for might be your ticket! Traveling by train through Europe is a wonderful experience. You are able to see the most scenic places in each country for a great price and in almost the same amount of time as you would by plane. Whether you’re taking short day trips or an overnight haul, the railways are more than capable of accommodating you. This is a fantastic way to see all of Europe on a budget. You can spend as much or as little as you’d like and save more money if you plan ahead and travel with a group.
