A Local’s Guide To Fairhope, AL

Nestled by Mobile Bay, Fairhope is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state.

This little town is humble and quaint and offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Alabama, ranging from the colorful expanse of flowers across downtown to the old cascading oaks by the beach.

It’s best known for its slow-paced nature and family-friendly feel and boasts genuine southern hospitality. 

With a wide variety of activities, restaurants, coffee, and shops, you will have a full itinerary while feeling right at home. 

Stay at the Hampton Inn right in the center of downtown, or escape to the famous Marriott Grand Hotel a few miles down the road.

There is a place for everyone here.

Fairhope Pier

The Pier is the number one attraction.

It is likely, if you see a picture of Fairhope, it will be of the Pier.

This is where locals come to fish and toss their cast nets and a place for families to go for an evening walk.

Also, a fantastic location for everyone to come to watch the sunset.

Just in front of the pier is a huge fountain which makes for the perfect backdrop for photos.

Located in the surrounding area are walking trails that are a perfect place for evening strolls.

Some trails stretch the length of Fairhope beach and some that are in the shade under the old oak trees. 

Public restrooms are provided, and parking is completely free!

If you vacation here in the summer and decide to drive down to the beach, you will have to pay a fee of $20. 

However, during the off seasons, which are still plenty warm, it won’t cost you a dime.

The Grand Hotel

The second highlight in a local’s guide to Fairhope, AL is The Grand Hotel. 

If you’re looking to kick back and relax in luxury, this is where you need to stay.

During World War II, it was a hospital for soldiers and was remade into a beautiful hotel that oozes southern charm.

The Grand Hotel has two outdoor pools, one of which has a waterfall and a waterslide.

It also has a heated indoor pool and whirlpool.

When staying here, you will have access to a full spa with a sauna, steam room, and soaking area.

The grounds are a popular venue for weddings with willow trees, old oaks, and several ponds.

During the summer months, there is access to two famous golf courses, kayak and bike rentals.

The Fairhope Clock

The iconic clock centered in the heart of downtown is easily the most photographed location other than the pier.

During the winter, it’s a fantastic location for family photos, with the giant Christmas tree on display in the background, surrounded by the seasonally lit crepe myrtles.

If you plan accordingly, you may even get to participate in the “Lighting of the Trees” ceremony hosted by the city every November. 

Thousands gather in the streets to watch the beautiful display as the lights are turned on, illuminating the town with a homey holiday appearance with the clock merrily housed in the middle.

During the spring and summer, colorful flowers are situated in carefully placed beds lining the streets, making for a beautiful backdrop with the clock front and center. 

Restaurants & Coffee

Coffee 

The Coffee and restaurant game in this little rural town is STRONG (pun 100% intended!)

My personal favorite abode for a daily caffeine fix is The Coffee Loft.

While it’s not right in the center of downtown, it’s about half a mile walking distance or an easy one to two-minute drive down section street. 

May I suggest trying the blended Irish kiss? 

You won’t regret it if you’re a fan of Irish cream.

There are so many other great choices for coffee as well, like Latté Da, The Warehouse, and Refuge, which makes a phenomenal lavender latte. 

Restaurants

Restaurants are in no short supply, and the freshly caught seafood can’t be beaten.

Some great options are The Wash House, Fish River Grill, and Dragonfly if you’re looking for fusion cuisine.

The Wash House is located on scenic highway 98 between downtown and The Grand Hotel. 

While there is no dress code per se, this is a fine dining establishment.

They present you with locally caught and prepared dishes, and casual dress is highly recommended.

The atmosphere is light and welcoming, and the food is exquisite. 

The Fish River Grill may look homely from the outside, but they offer the best fried shrimp I have ever tasted. 

Hopefully, you’ll be in town for the Dragonfly’s Taco Tuesday.

They serve $2 specialty tacos starting at 5:00 pm and also $2 PBRs and I have yet to eat a bad taco.

Aside from these top choices, there are also wonderful Italian, Mediterranean, and Asian choices. 

Gambinos is a legendary local favorite, Sage serves an exceptional Lebanese menu, and Tokyo delivers the finest sushi in the area.

The food choices here are all mouthwatering, but these are just some of my favorites!

Popular Events

Art Walk

Fairhope is packed with fun-filled family events year-round!

During the first Friday of each month, the city hosts art walk.

This is a great event for everyone to mingle and enjoy local artists with work on display.

The art tables are set in front of popular wine bars and regular bars, making it easily accessible to enjoy a glass or two.

Even though there are people participating in jovial libations, it’s still extremely family oriented. 

Many families arrive with dogs and little ones in tow, creating a safe and comfortable environment to be enjoyed by all. 

So take a walk around on that first Friday, enjoy some art, and experience some small-town hospitality. 

Mardi Gras

The biggest event in Fairhope, AL is easily Mardi Gras.

Despite what many people think and believe, Mardi Gras originated in the city of Mobile, which is visible right across the bay from Fairhope.

Naturally, the surrounding areas take pride in celebrating each year with several parades hosting decorated floats and throwing moon pies and beads. 

If you miss one, don’t worry.

There are plenty of parades to attend here and in the other local cities!

Fairhope Art Festival

As you may have guessed, Fairhope is big on art culture. 

This is the second-largest event of the year and just as fun as Mardi Gras.

The art festival is held at the beginning of March every year and features over 500 booths and artists.

These artists may be from the area, but they also come from all over the country.

Each person offers unique merchandise, and you are guaranteed to find something that interests you. 

Spread among the eclectic variations of work are some fantastic food trucks.

You can’t go wrong with eating great local food, walking underneath oak trees, and enjoying the spring sunshine. 

Fairhope is Alabama’s best-kept secret.

This family-friendly town will have you saying “y’all” and planning your next visit before you even leave. 

There is something for everyone here, and you will find yourself at your home away from home.

Enjoy your day starting with some freshly brewed coffee, start your evening with local seafood, and end your night with a swim in the Grand Hotel pool.

Or visit during one of the popular events like Mardi Gras.

It never gets too cold here, so don’t worry about snow.
