10 Essentials for Solo Female Travel by Priscilla December 13, 2021 written by Priscilla Are you new to the solo female traveling world or wondering what items to bring on your next adventure? Maybe you’re thinking about what could make your experience go more smoothly? Getting started on your next, or first, travel journey is so exciting, so let me help you! Here is a list of 10 essentials while traveling as a solo female that will keep you safe and give you peace of mind whether you’re flying, road tripping, or backpacking. Packing cubes Y’all, let me just start by saying I freaking LOVE packing cubes. These cute little zipper bags are truly a lifesaver when you’re traveling solo with just a backpack or packing for a trip. If you need multiple outfits or clothing choices because of the weather, these are for you! They save a ton of space, come in lots of sizes, and are super easy to clean. Menstrual cup Are you on your period every.single.time you go on vacation (unless you are a lucky person and can skip that time of the month)? I’m not entirely sure how this always happens, but I do know having a menstrual cup is worth having, especially while scuba diving or on long flights ❤️ No one likes their lady parts feeling jabbed while they sit, so this one has a rounded tab at the end that makes it more comfortable. https://thejunecup.com/ Shampoo/Conditioner bar Let’s be completely honest, not having to carry around a container of shampoo and conditioner is kind of liberating. Having something small and light is the way to go and you don’t have to worry about TSA confiscating it! These little bars are great if you’re in a situation where your shower relies on you using one hand to continuously hold down a button for water (I’m looking at you, Europe). These are my personal favorite! https://www.lushusa.com/hair/shampoo-bars/ External charger I can’t tell you how many times I have been on a plane, ready to charge my device with a direct USB port in the seat only to find out there isn’t one. Sad day! Thankfully, these bad boys are not expensive and even a small one can fully charge your phone a few times. **These do contain a lithium-ion battery and must be kept in your carry-on bags. Backpack designed for a female body Most outdoor companies have packs with shoulder straps, hip straps, and the back itself, designed for a female figure. This item is new-ish to me and to be honest, I didn’t even know this existed for many years. I’m sure glad it does though! Offline maps Finding out the hard way that you can’t download a map without wifi is no bueno in the middle of another country when you’re alone. If you are planning on driving, walking, and navigating yourself around, this is an absolute must. Knowing your location is incredibly important. Also, you can always go back and delete old maps and download new ones. Selfie stick/tripod with remote Since Covid is still among us, or for the introverts out there, I totally get not wanting to ask others to touch your phone to get that awesome, insta worthy shot. Selfie sticks and small tripods (for phones and cameras) have been around for a while and for good reason! They’re inexpensive, they work, and you don’t have to ask anyone to take your photo. Sanitary wipes Wipes are good for literally anything. Need to wash your hands, but don’t have water or sanitizer? Wipes. Need to go to the bathroom in the middle of nowhere? Wipes. Need to just freshen up a bit? Wipes are always there for you. If you’ve ever spent an entire day traveling or have been stuck in an airport because your flight was canceled, you know the importance of these. Even having a small pack of a few can make all the difference and are generally sold in airports if you forget. RFID wallet An RFID wallet can protect you and your finances and personal information from hackers lurking anywhere. They block out radio frequencies used by hackers to steal info from your debit/credit cards and passports. Purses and small cardholders are also made using RFID protective technology. Trip itinerary Probably the best solo female essential tip related to your safety. Sometimes vacations made on a whim are the best ones, however, having a plan is important! If possible, set up a small itinerary to keep for yourself, or to let others know where you plan to be. It’s always better to safe than sorry. Bonus for ladies in the USA* Global entry/TSA pre-check This is an excellent bonus for those who live in the United States AND already have a passport. TSA pre-check is self-explanatory, but global entry will let you bypass customs on the way back into the U.S. from other countries and includes TSA pre-check. All you need to do is google search “global entry/TSA precheck” and you will be directed to the appropriate page. The fee is $80 for TSA precheck and $100 for global entry and is good for five years. There is a process to getting global entry, but worth it and will save you time and headaches. Make traveling by yourself easy and safer from the get-go! Doing a smidge of pre-planning, at least about what you might need, will save you some precious exploring time. No one likes to be in the middle of vacation and have to stop because you need to do some research or have to buy something that might not even be available.
